"Benjamin Mays, a son of Valentine and Sabina (Heilman) Mays, and a grandson of John Nicholas and Susannna Mays was born near Schaefferstown, April 25, 1805.  Valentine Manys was a farmer, and Benjamin assisted his father on the farm until he was 18 years old, when he was apprenticed to a cabinetmaker to learn the art and mystery of cabinet-making.  At the expiration of his apprenticeship, following the custon in vogue among artsans in European countries of making journeys before settling down to their trades, he mad a trip in a stage-coach on the National pike as far west as Indianapolis, which was then a frontier town.  On his return from that journey, Mr. Mays opened a Cabinetmaker's and and undertaker's shop in Schaefferstown, and followed that trade successfull for upwards of forty years, until the infirmities incident to old age compelled him to retire form active pursuits.
In 1829 he married Miss Margaret Balentin, niece and adopted daughter of Samuel Rex, Esq., of Schaefferstown, and Granddaughter of Anthony Stiegel, a brother to Baron Henry William Stiegel, and settled down in the Old homestead on Main Street, belonging to Nr. Rex, Mrs. Mays' adoptive father, which the latter subsequently willed to Mrs. Mays.  The couple lived in happy wedlock sixty-six years and had a family of nine children, five sons and four daughters, to wit: Professor Cyrus V. (deceased), John M., Dr. George, Samuel V., Esq., (deceased), Chas. H., Mary, wife of Dr. J.W. Steinmetz; Emma Sabina (deceased), Camilla E., Widow of George Berger (deceased), and Sarah Olivia.
In politics Mr. Mays was one of the staunches to Democrats, and consistently voted the ticket of his party al through life.  In religion he was a member of the Reformed church, whose doctrines and institutions he loved ardently from his boyhood to his death.  He was a liberl giver and a zealous worker in the church, Sunday school and missionary society, and many will yet rise to call him blessed for what he did for their spiritual welfare.  The cause of education never had a warmer friend or advocate than Mr. Mays was.  He gave all his chldren the very best educational advantages within his means.  Four of the sons matriculated at Franklin and Marshall College, and two gradualted form it with high honors  the daughters, too, were well educated.
Mr. Mays died December 3, 1895, full of days and of honors, and highly respected by all who kew him, as an earnest, conssitent Christian, a faithful friend, and a good neighbor."

Notes for Henry Jacob Mays:
At the age of fourteen was engaged in the tanning business Schaefferstown, Pa.
working for William Miller.  In 1859 he went to Baltimore, where he learned the currier's trade form F. Ache & Son, in the frame building where the great fire broke out in 1904. at that place he remained until 1865, in which year he came to Womelsdorf and engaged in tanning until 1888, when he formed a partnership with his son, Jacob, as a partner in the hide business, of which the son took entire charge in 1902.  Mr. Mays is now enjoying the comforts of a well-earned rest.  His home is on the very ground where General George Washington spent the night of Nov. 13, 1793, in the then "Seltzer Hotel."  Mr. Mays is a stanch Democrat, and he has always been active in party affairs.  He is a member of Williamson Lodge, No. 307, F & A M, and the Jr. O.U.A.M, of Womelsdorf, and the Knights of Pythias, of Robesonia.  He was also an Odd Fellow, and helped to bury a Nr. Wilty, the first Odd Fellow in the United States.  Mr. Mays is a Member of the Reformed denomination of Zion's Union Church.

"Cyrus Valentine Mays, A. M., a son of Benjamin and Margaret ( Valentine) Mays, was born in Schaefferstown, Lebanon county, Pennsylvania, December 22, 1830.  He prepared him self for college i the local schools, entered the Freshman class of Franklin and Marshall college in 1852, and graduated form said institution, foru years later, with the highest honors of his class.  he received the detree of A. m. in course, and was a member of the Geothean Literary Society.  In 1857 he tookCharg of the parochial school of the Reformed church in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, at the same time pursuing theological studies under Rev. Daniel Gans, with a view of entering the gospel ministry.  Subsequently he became an instructor in the Schaefferstown Academy, and prpared a number of Young Men for College.  In the fall of 1863, he took charge of the Germantown Academy, founded in 1760, reorganized the school, and brought it to a most flourishing stae.  In 1872, when Franklin and Marshall College opened a Preparatory department, Professor Mays became the first principal, Being induced to under take the tsk vy and strong desire to advance the interests of his Alma Mater.  In consequence of the inperfect heating and ventilation of the Acedemy building , he took a severe cold form the effects of which he died, September 22, 1876, in the flower of his usefulnes, greatly lamented.  He possessed fine scholarly attainments, was a writer of ability, and contributed poetry and prose to various periodicals.  December 27, 1866, he married Miss Hannah L Romig, of Allentown, Pennsylvania, who, wiht their only child, Miss Edithe R., survives-Franklin and Marshal Obituary Record."

"In 1842 his father bought the Schaeffer farm, near Schaefferstown, and moved thereon with his family. John assisted in farm work and during the winter season attended the local public schools until 1850, when he entered Marshall Academy at Mercersburg, to prepare for college, haveing decided to enter the gospel ministry.  He graduated with honors from Franklin and Marshall College at Lancaster, with the class of 1856.  Thereupon he entered the Reformed Theological Seminary at Mercersburg and graduated therefrom in 1858.  Then entering upon the work of the active ministry and has been engaged therein ever since, ministering to charges at Sunbury, Danville and elsewhere.  For upwards of twenty years he has seved as pastor of St. John's Reformed church of Reading, which was a weak mission station when he took charge of it.  Under his watchful care and wise control, the congregation soon became self-supporting and at present is in a flourishing condition and has a large Sunday-school connected with it.
Rev. Dr. Steinmetz is a Scholarly gentlemen, a polished pulpit orator in the English and German Languages, and a zealous and conscientious pastor.  His Alma Mater, recognizing his ability and erdition,confered upon him the honorary titles of A. M. and D. D."

"George Mays, a son of Benjamin (Valentine, John Nicholas) ad Margaret (Valentine) Mays, was born in
Schaefferstown.  He was educated in the public schools, Schaefferstown Academy, and Franklin and Marshall College.  Then he read medicine in the office of Dr. Christian Bucher, his uncle, and took a full medical course in the University of Pennsylvania, graduating therefrom.  In 1861 he entered the service of the United States government as surgeon of the Ninety-third regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and gained a reputation as a skiful parctitioner.  After the war he opened an office as geral practitioner of medicine at Lititz, Pennsylvania, and in a short time succeeded in establishing a good practice.  Ten he married Miss Agnes Zerbe, daughter fo Dr. Jonathan Zerbe, of Schaefferstown.  But his wife died in a few years: and after her death the doctor returned to his native town and there assisted his father-in-law for some time in the parctice of his Profession.  Subsequently he opened and office in Philadelphia, and met with signal success.  Ther he married Miss Annie Erhlen, and has had issue with her, two children: George and Miss Florence.  Dr. Mays is Polished gentleman, a physician and surgeon of ability, and a writer fo considerable merit."

Mays obtained his education in the Comon Schools, alternating his Attendance with work on his father's farm until he was thirteen years old, when he began hiring out among farmers.  In 1872 he began farming on his own Account in North Lebanon Township, Lebanon county, near Avon, where he remained for two years.  In 1882 he removed to Berks county, settling on the William Stover farm, of 200 Acres, in Bern Township, which he cultivated for three years.  The next fifteen years Mr Mays worked the well known George Ruth farm of eighty three Acres in Cumru Township, in 1900 moving upon the old Seitzinger farm in Spring township, mow embraced in the borough confines of West Reading and Womissing.  This property, which comprises over two Hundred acres of the best land in the county, is now owned by the Pennsylvania Trust Company.  Mrl Mays is now engaged as a farmer and dairynam at West Reading, in Spring township, and he is successful and up-to-date in his methods, Having the most modern and approved machinery and excellent live stock, including sixteen horses and over forty head of cattle.  His milk is shipped daily by team to Reading, where it is retailed, the product consisting of about two hundred Quarts dairy.

spent his boyhood days with his Parents, and acquired his education in the township schools, the borough high school, Stoner's Business College at Reading, and Albright College at Myerstown, In the spring of 1903 he engaged in the leather, hide and tallow business at Womelsdorf, which he has successfully continued to the present time. He buys hides in large quantities all over Eastern Pennsylvania, and these he prpares for the market, selling them through his New York broker.He has been very successful in this line, and his business is rapidly growing to mammoth proportions. in 1904 Mr. Mays was elected a justice of the peace, since which time he has  settled a number of estates, has a nice clientage, and has also the support of his brother, H . Tobert Mays, a promissing youg Atorney of No. 541 Court Street, Reading, Pennsylvania, and now county solicitor of Berks county.
Mr. Mays is a n Active Democrat and has Been delegate to a number of couty and State Conventions.  Socially he is connected with Williamson Lodge, No. 307. R. & A. M.; Excelsior Chapter, No 237, R. A. M.; Reading Commandery, No. 42, K. T.; Rajah Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S.; K. G. E,. Womelsdorf Castle; I.O.O.F.,
of Womelsdorf; and the Womelsdor Volunteer Fire Company.  He and his fanily are Reformed members of Zion's Union Church, of which he is a trustee.
In 1906 Mr. Mays eredted a beautiful residence on High Street, Womelsdorf, a Colonial mansion of three stories, which is considered on to the finest homes in the Borough.
